Beaches of Diego Suarez: The Ultimate Guide to Finding Your Paradise (Beyond Ramena)

When planning a trip to Diego Suarez (Antsiranana), one name keeps coming up: Ramena. That's normal, it's the "postcard" spot. But limiting Northern Madagascar to just this one beach would be a mistake.

The Diego region is an archipelago of bays, each offering a radically different experience. Are you looking for wind for your kite? The absolute silence of a bivouac? Or just calm water for the children?

Here is the guide to finding your beach, classified not by map, but by desire.

1. The "Life & Family" Experience: The Accessible Postcard#

For whom? Families, groups of friends, those who love liveliness and eating with their feet in the sand.

The Lively Village: Ramena Beach

It's the weekend HQ. Located 20km from Diego (paved road), Ramena is a vibrant and colorful fishing village.

The Vibe: Popular and festive, especially on Sundays. Small restaurants (gargotes) line the sand, serving grilled fish and zebu skewers freshly caught.
Swimming: The water is calm, protected by the bay's entrance. Very little current, ideal for children.
The Plus: This is where boats depart for the Emerald Sea.

The Shaded Cove: Orangea Beach

Just after Ramena, continuing towards the military path, you come across Orangea.

The Setting: Wilder than Ramena but just as swimmable. The sand is fine, the atmosphere more hushed. It's the perfect compromise if you find Ramena too noisy.

2. The "Adrenaline" Experience: Wind and Glide#

For whom? Kitesurfers, windsurfers, and those who want to see unreal blues.

The Wind Spot: Sakalava Bay

Indian Ocean side (East). Here, the Varatraza (the northern trade wind) blows strong and steady from April to November.

The Setting: A huge tongue of white sand, turquoise water as far as the eye can see and... sails everywhere.
The Activity: It's one of the best kitesurfing spots in the world. The water is shallow for hundreds of meters (flat), perfect for learning or tricking.
Good to Know: If you don't kite, the wind can be tiring for a simple tanning session.

The Turquoise Lagoon: The Emerald Sea (Nosy Suarez)

Accessible by boat from Ramena. It's not a classic "beach", it's a giant lagoon enclosed by a coral barrier.

The Experience: The color of the water is indescribable. You swim on the islets (Nosy Suarez, Nosy Antaly). It's also a mythical kite spot for "downwinds".

3. The "Adventure" Experience: 4x4 and Wild Nature#

For whom? Explorers, instagrammers (for the crazy settings), snorkeling enthusiasts. Access: Sandy track. A 4x4 or quad is mandatory. This is the classic "Three Bays" excursion.

The White Dunes: Dune Bay

Neighbor to Sakalava, but a different vibe.

The Setting: As its name suggests, high white sand dunes border a sea that is often rougher. It's photogenic, raw, beautiful.

The Crystal Clear Cove: Pigeon Bay

The smallest and most charming of the three.

The Secret: It is more enclosed and rocky on the edges, offering often crystal-clear water. It is the best spot in the Three Bays to take out a mask and snorkel (snorkeling) and observe some tropical fish.

The Isolated Beach: Antalaha Bay

Warning, do not confuse with the vanilla city! Located well after the Three Bays, continuing the track to the south-east (~30-40 min more), or via Cap Miné.

The Experience: It is an immaculate white sand beach, often deserted. If you want to play Robinson Crusoe far from the groups of quads that stop at the Three Bays, this is where you must go. The feeling of isolation is total.

The Sandbank: Ampasindava Beach

Located completely to the West (Mozambique Channel side), opposite the Three Bays.

The Vibe: Here, little or no wind. The sea is like oil, often warm. It is a huge sandbank that is revealed at low tide.
The Spectacle: It is the only place on this list where you will see the sun set over the sea. The view looks directly onto the string of islands of the marine reserve.
The Village: Ampasindava is a model of ecotourism, a village powered by solar energy, very quiet. People come here to bivouac, eat organic, and disconnect.
